Samhain: The Celtic Origin of Halloween
As we get ready to launch our Spooky Season Is All Seasons line, we thought it appropriate to start sharing some lore and information that pertains to different aspects of the season.
Samhain, pronounced "sow-in," is a Celtic festival with ancient roots. It marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time often associated with death. During Samhain, the Celts believed that the boundary between the living and the dead blurred, allowing spirits to roam the Earth. For many, it was also a time of honoring and respecting our ancestors that were no longer with us and it wasn’t unusual for extra place settings to be set at the table.
As Christianity spread, Samhain evolved into Halloween, celebrated on October 31st. The traditions of bonfires, costumes, and carving pumpkins all have their origins in Samhain. These customs were meant to both ward off malevolent spirits and celebrate the harvest.
In our t-shirt designs, we celebrate this ancient connection to Halloween by incorporating elements that pay homage to Samhain's rich history. Our designs blend the eerie and the festive, capturing the essence of this mystical holiday.
